Our Team
The Brain Healthspan Lab brings together clinicians, researchers and health-technology leaders across geriatric medicine, neurology, neuroimaging, data science and artificial intelligence.
We share a common goal: to help people maintain better brain health for longer. By combining clinical expertise with data, technology and human-centred approaches, we develop and evaluate practical solutions for prevention, early detection and personalised intervention — and translate them into real-world clinical and community settings.


Dr Tan Li Feng is a Senior Consultant Geriatrician at Alexandra Hospital and Geriatrics Lead at the NUHS Regional Health System Office. Her clinical and research interests span cognition, frailty, sarcopenia and healthy ageing, with a particular focus on helping older adults maintain cognitive and functional independence.
She leads research that brings brain health beyond the clinic into the community, combining early risk identification, lifestyle and behavioural interventions, digital health and community partnerships. She is Principal Investigator of IMPROVE-COG, an NMRC-supported programme using AI and personalised brain-care approaches to advance the early detection and prevention of cognitive decline and dementia.
Her work reflects a simple goal:Â to help people not only live longer, but live healthier and cognitively well for longer.

Dr Benjamin Tan
Vascular Neurology | Precision Brain Health | Population Data
Dr Benjamin Tan is a Consultant Neurologist at the National University Hospital, Adjunct Assistant Professor at the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, and Joint Principal Investigator at the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology, A*STAR. His clinical and research interests include stroke in young adults, cerebrovascular disease genetics and brain health.
His research examines how vascular, genetic, imaging and behavioural factors interact across the life course to influence brain health. He is particularly interested in translating large-scale clinical, biomarker and genomic data into tools for risk prediction, prevention and personalised care. During his research fellowship in Boston with the Brain Care Labs, he was part of the team that helped develop and validate the Brain Care Score (BCS), a multidimensional tool designed to assess modifiable factors associated with brain health.
His team also leads research using AI and real-world health data to identify individuals at risk of cognitive impairment earlier, creating opportunities for personalised intervention before substantial cognitive decline occurs. His broader goal is to bridge precision medicine, data science and preventive neurology to help people maintain better brain health across the lifespan.


Dr Chong Yao Feng
Dr Chong Yao Feng is a Consultant Neurologist at the National University Hospital with a special interest in behavioural neurology, dementia and cognitive disorders. He is Clinical Lead of the University Brain Health Unit (UBHU), where he oversees multidisciplinary assessment and care for individuals presenting with cognitive concerns.
His research sits at the intersection of clinical cognitive neurology, neuroimaging and artificial intelligence. He is particularly interested in using advanced imaging and machine-learning approaches to improve how cognitive impairment and dementia are detected, characterised and monitored, and in identifying imaging patterns that may help distinguish different causes and trajectories of cognitive decline.
Within the Brain Healthspan Lab, he provides an important bridge between brain-health prevention, early detection and specialist cognitive care. His clinical perspective helps ensure that new digital, imaging and AI-based tools address meaningful clinical problems, complement specialist assessment and can ultimately be translated into better diagnostic and care pathways for patients.

Dr Andrew Makmur
Dr Andrew Makmur is Group Chief Technology Officer of the National University Health System and a Senior Consultant in Diagnostic Imaging at the National University Hospital, with a special interest in neuroradiology.
He brings together expertise in medical imaging, artificial intelligence, and large-scale technology implementation. His work focuses on translating advances in AI and digital health from research environments into tools that can be deployed safely, effectively and at scale within real-world healthcare systems.
Within the Brain Healthspan Lab, he provides the expertise required to build scalable, digital technology approaches to brain health. His focus is on closing the gap between innovation and implementation — transforming algorithms, imaging and health data into practical tools that can improve brain-health care at population scale.

Dr James Lee is an Endocrine Surgeon and Deputy Group Chief Technology Officer at the National University Health System (NUHS), Singapore, whose work sits at the intersection of clinical medicine, data, artificial intelligence, and health system transformation. Motivated by a commitment to improving the lives of patients, he began his career in surgery before recognising that many of healthcare’s greatest challenges—including delayed diagnosis, fragmented care, administrative burden, and unwarranted variation—are often failures of systems rather than medicine itself. He currently leads the Horus Initiative, a cluster-wide clinical intelligence platform that integrates data, AI, analytics, and clinical workflows to support patient care, operations, education, and research across NUHS. Through Horus and related initiatives such as CalSense+, WISE-AI, IncisionLabs, and digital phenotyping programmes, he focuses on developing trusted and scalable digital solutions that address real-world clinical problems. Dr Lee believes that the future of healthcare will be defined not by how much AI is developed, but by how effectively it is integrated into everyday clinical practice through thoughtful attention to people, workflows, governance, and culture. Alongside his clinical and technology leadership roles, he remains actively engaged in research, education, and mentoring the next generation of clinician-innovators. His mission is to help build learning health systems that continuously transform data into knowledge, knowledge into better decisions, and ultimately, better outcomes for every patient.

Ms Averie Lim is the Project Manager for IMPROVE-COG, responsible for driving the strategic and operational execution of the programme. She leads project planning and coordination, research administration, participant engagement initiatives, and partnership development. Working closely with clinicians, researchers, industry partners, and community stakeholders, she helps build and sustain collaborations that advance innovation in brain health research, prevention, and care.
